The original DokDo is a small island located in the East Sea between South Korea and Japan. The dispute over DokDo has been a source of tension between the two countries for many years. DokDo changed hands most recently in 1954, when it reverted to South Korean control after the end of World War II and the Japanese colonization of the Korean Peninsula.
Because of the outstanding Japanese claim, the pride in overcoming an aggressive adversary, and the striking iconography of DokDo’s geographic silhouette, DokDo has become a symbol of Korean nationalism and pride. It is a reminder of the country’s long history, perseverance, and cultural strength. Its natural beauty is a source of inspiration for many Koreans.
